Dropbox on CentOS

Download and unzip

  • https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx
  • what this command will do
    • move to the current user's home directory
    • download file to STDOUT
    • and unzip it
      cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64" | tar xzf -
      

Headless Install through command line interface ( CLI ) - No Gnome

  • there will a directory ~/.dropbox-dist , run this.
    ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
    
  • there will be a link will be printed out on screen like this
    This computer isn't linked to any Dropbox account...
    Please visit https://www.dropbox.com/cli_link_nonce?nonce=<some_hash_code> to link this device.
    
  • copy and paste to browser
    https://www.dropbox.com/cli_link_nonce?nonce=<some_hash_code>
    
  • Then, we can see msg like this.
    This computer is now linked to Dropbox. Welcome Apple
    
  • Since it's not running daemon mode, screen will be stuck. ctrl+c and stop. there will be two new directories.
    drwx------  5 yo yo   4096 May 30 18:14 .dropbox
    drwx------ 10 yo yo   4096 May 30 18:14 Dropbox
    
  • Two new directories
    • Dropbox is data directory
    • .dropbox has dropbox configuration.
  • Download dropbox helper python script
    curl -LO https://www.dropbox.com/download?dl=packages/dropbox.py
    
  • move python helper and add execution permission
    mv dropbox.py dropbox_helper
    chmod 755 dropbox_helper
    mv dropbox_helper .dropbox-dist
    sudo ln -s /home/yo/.dropbox-dist/dropbox_helper  /usr/local/bin/dropbox_helper
    
  • For CLI, changing data directory is not supported - Dropbox Commpunity

Install through Fedora RPM package with CentOS7 Gnome - Won't work with CLI

  • download Fedora 64bit RPM package from dropbox - Dropbox Download for Linux
    cd ~ && curl -LO https://www.dropbox.com/download?dl=packages/fedora/nautilus-dropbox-2015.10.28-1.fedora.x86_64.rpm
    
  • Double-click the downloaded RPM package
  • CentOS Gnome will show Dropbox installation popup

How dropbox start automatically on CentOS Gnome

  • there is desktop shortcut in /usr/share/applications/dropbox.desktop
  • this shortcut is in ~/.config/autostart
